Our Purpose

Friends of Wa He Lut School was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to support Wa He Lut Indian School students, families, programs and operations. Wa He Lut is an intertribal K–8 school serving over 140 students from more than 25 tribal nations. The school was founded in 1974 by Maiselle Bridges, Suzette Bridges, Alison Gottfriedson, Edith McCloud, Pat Kalama, and Billy Frank Jr. The school’s name, Wa He Lut, comes from a Nisqually warrior whose power flowed from thunder and lightning. Wa He Lut focuses on traditional Native values of family, kinship, and community. Students are encouraged to value their own cultures while respecting the cultural diversity of others. Located at Frank’s Landing just north of Olympia, on the southeast bank of the Nisqually River near I‑5 and the Billy Frank, Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, Wa He Lut also integrates environmental stewardship into all aspects of school life.
